“There is a huge gap in the market for major media outlets geared toward African American, Christian women,” says Dianna Hobbs, 30 year old Founder and Editor-in-Chief of Empowering Everyday Women Online Magazine. The website can be found at www.eewmagazine.com. She’s settled on bridging it, once and for all. “African American women often struggle for a platform in the church and the corporate world,” she says, “but this shouldn’t be the case.”
Perhaps, it won’t be for long. Dianna Hobbs and her staff at Empowering Everyday Women, is poised to level the playing field for Christian women, by leveraging the internet to create non-traditional avenues for advertising, marketing and promotion. The web-based publication is aimed at filling a void that has long existed for African American women striving to make their marks in the world.
“For years, Dianna has been bothered by this issue and she’s been looking for a way to help,” says husband, Kenya Hobbs, Senior Vice President of Operations for the magazine. “When she shared her vision for the online magazine with such clarity and passion, I instantly knew, this was more than a mere business plan. This was a calling she had to fulfill.”
After she and a team of business partners solidified the model, the online magazine launched its first national campaign, reaching more than 150,000 households, nationwide. “It’s crucial that we give a voice to African American Christian women,” says Dianna, “there are thousands who are sick and tired of being overlooked, and I want to provide them with an outlet to release their creativity, and walk in their purpose.”
According to a recent study conducted by the Center for Women Policy Studies, women of color believe they are overlooked in corporate America. As a matter of fact, more than 4 out of 10 women of color say they are not given the same number of opportunities to be promoted, as their white counterparts, even though they are equally qualified. (No More “Business as Usual”; Women of Color in Corporate America-Report of the National Women of Color Work/Life Survey, 1999)
Consequently, in order to create inroads for themselves, a trend is emerging among women of color. Through advanced technology, social media, and online communities, they’re networking, creating viable connections, and opening up opportunities that would otherwise be unavailable to them.
Research shows that women are the fastest-growing demographic among Internet users today. According to Marti Barletti, a women’s marketing expert, “Women are chief purchasers, at home and in the workplace. They control more than 80% of all consumer purchases and represent more than half of corporate buyers.”
The number of African American Christian women online, between the ages of 18-40, is multiplying more rapidly now, than ever. Though they may be overlooked by some, this isn’t true of all. Business savvy leaders and entrepreneurs, both male and female, are tapping into the marketing power of online women’s communities to cater to this thriving market. They’re riding the wave and reaping the benefits all the while.
